My ex and I met through mutual friends. One of those friends ended up being my roommate. Long story short, that friend was manipulative, controlling, and emotionally abusive. He even went so far as to make passes at me and manipulate me into cuddling with him.
My ex knew all of this. He held me while I cried and broke down over roommate’s behavior. He saw plenty of the behaviors first hand. Finally, I moved out, and more or less cut contact with roommate.
Did my ex care? Nope. He was still buddies with him, texted memes back and forth all the time, hung out and played games with him. Like nothing ever happened. When I questioned him about this, he alluded to thinking I was being dramatic.
What I learned from all this is you should never tolerate a partner accepting disrespect towards you. He is saying that this friendship is worth more than your safety, comfort, and dignity. Who you hang around says a lot about your own character. If you’re willingly friends with an asshole, make excuses for their shittiness, and even shrug off that person hurting your partner? You might be an asshole, too.
Good on you for standing your ground and refusing to tolerate this behavior. Honestly, I would ditch the boyfriend. There are plenty of men who will respect you enough to not be friends with someone who is openly mean to you. Don’t make the same mistake I did and get forced into uncomfortable social situations for years because boyfriend wants to play Switzerland.
