This would be my approach. You can trust her and still verify. It may be someone else, it may be her but not a date, etc. Just find out when the person (possibly your wife) is at the restaurant, and if your wife isn’t home at the time, stop by.

A relationship is about two people, with different minds, and it only works if both people want it to work and do all the steps needed to communicate and compromise. Sometimes relationship don't work because both people do something wrong, sometimes one of the partners do something wrong and the other partner does not, and sometimes nobody does wrong things but they are just not compatible. In this case, HE is the one doing everything wrong because HE does NOT want a relationship with you, at all, but he's not taking the steps to leave because he doesn't want to find another job and you are his source of money. Take him at his word that you lost him already and lose him already, you clearly make enough money to support yourself so leave or evict him if the house is yours.

Late reply, but to answer, she chooses her b-day dinners as do I for my b-day. She likes fancy restaurants, especially for birthdays. As stated in my OP, we eat out every weekend — $100 is right around average for our weekends out (anywhere between $60 – $100 depending where we go). I planned the year's V-day dinner and yes, chose the place for the both of us and she loved it from what I could tell. Part of the reasoning I picked this place is because I knew she'd like it.
We've been together for 12 years. Going on 13 in 2023. Trust me, I'm not picking these expensive places just because I think she'd like it, but because I know she would. Dunno if that makes sense.
