1. Yeah… surgery and pain meds will completely screw up a personality.

4. I'm not saying break up…I'm saying re-evaluate the relationship: that can entail therapy, learning to communicate better, setting and respecting boundaries.

   It's not a normal reaction for one partner to become so angered by their partner trying to find common ground and learning to appreciate the others interest. It shouldn't degrade into being accused of being a “poser”.

6. Simple solution that doesn't involve you, her, or her ex…ask her son directly what he wants and go with that. If he says he wants to keep his dad's last name, be ready to step up and defend his decision to her if she tries to protest. He's 8 which is more than old enough to know what he wants when it comes to his name.
