I know I’m not perfect, and honestly think I am too sensitive and get so anxious starting tough conversations with him that I overthink and ramble trying to overexplain myself so maybe he’ll understand me.

Yeah. That's not going to happen. The best you'll get at the beginning is him agreeing to trying your proposed resolution. If you get empathy that's weeks or months down the line after you guts start communicating better.
