I would really like to see whoever told you about Greece repeating it now. Renting on the islands is straight up impossible ( to the point that the schools lack teachers and the hospitals doctors because renting is so expensive that they prefer to be unemployed than going to work there ) . Rent in Athens (where about half of the population of the country lives ) has almost doubled since 2009 , while salaries have dropped considerably . A very large % of people below the age of 40 live with their elderly parents because they cant afford anything else. Long story short , unless you live in some rural town with 0 tourism (and that's not where the vast majority lives ) , there is no way you could possibly afford rent with a near minimum wage job (the kind of job the vast majority of people do here ) .
Buy a nice ring in the style she wants with the budget you can afford. She doesn’t need to know how much you spent. Some real great options out there for $2-$5k.
Long term… yeah that's going to cause problems unless one of you is willing to alter your beliefs and lifestyle.
