I think it’s a bit selfish, though albeit in your circumstances, rightfully so, to want to get married to “get away”. But think of it from your boyfriends perspective. You want to be married to be away from family- do the two of you make enough to be able to live comfortably on your own, with shared expenses, taxes, vehicle expenses, and rent/mortgage? Who is the financial breadwinner, and would leaving home change that?
Finance is crucial to being able to start a partnership on your guys’ own, and I think it’s reasonable to want that stability before settling down.
Now— proposing a future isn’t something that’s financially straining. “I will marry you one day, live as though we’re married now” can be achieved with a small unofficial wedding, where the two of you are bound by promise but not legality just yet. If you want that title of marriage who’s going to stop the two of you from acting like it?
It’s tricky, but I think your boyfriend is right to want stability, and you’re valid to want to escape from your home life. The middle ground isn’t marriage until the two of you can contribute equally and hold onto that stability after moving out onto your own.
