I think you should just cut the old guy out of your life. There's nothing there. You left him. He was abusive. Cut off all communication. If course he's confusing your thoughts. He's in your ear all the time. Stop listening to him. Block him on every form of communication.

If you want a relationship don't have sex outside of a relationship. Make your intentions known and see how he acts. Don't spend a lot of time at his place. You You need to know if he wants to do everything with you outside of a bedroom… Outside of sex. Are you dating other people? I'd just hate for you to rebound into the arms of someone who's going to play you. You're in a vulnerable state right now. A sociopathic will take advantage of that. Will tell you anything to earn your trust so be careful.
Spend more time with working on yourself. Your health, mental health, weight, family & friends relationships, earning potential (make more money) hobbies, education etc. Also it's OK to date (not sleep with) more than one person so that you can be exposed to available men. Find one that will become your friend. Someone who will protect you, show you off and treat with respect.

Cheating is a choice, and it's a choice weak people make. Try something novel like talking to him, but really just leave him. He doesn't deserve what you're doing to him. In a lot of cultures, they'd find it far more “wild” that you can permanently end the life of some dumb 14 year old who's stealing pennies out of your change bowl. They'd say that retributive justice is a far more wild, “law of the jungle” approach than the criminology traditions of Enlightenment thinkers like Bemtham or Voltaire.
