1. At 26 (both of you), I honestly have to say that it’s absurd to either be looked at as “the bad guy” or legitimately think you are. You’re not.

   I appreciate the context and I get it. Unfortunately, your hypothesis is likely correct. She’s seeing everyone around her at her age doing these things and that’s making her think that’s what’s “normal,” and that you’re not there is a problem.

   From that point of view, I wouldn’t say she’s crazy. We only know what we know. We always compare our lives to our peers. It now seems less like she’s coming at this with malice so much as she’s been led to believe she’s behind some arbitrary curve. That sucks. It’s just been ingrained.

   But you’re here not ready. Guess what? That’s ok! If you’re not ready, you’re not ready. The worst thing you can do is commit to a monumental life step when you’re not ready in hoping that the result will make you magically ready or happy. It won’t.

   I’ll finish with more to my anecdote. Again, I’m a guy, 36 with a 2 year old and one on the way with a 36 year old wife. To back up, my mother had me at 20. Amazing mother who I love dearly and I have amazing parents. But times have changed. I’ll still argue that my 20 year old mother was more mature than I am now at 36.

   But do I feel behind because my parents had kids in their 20s? No. Conditions at the time allowed for that to happen successfully, and it did. I absolutely wasn’t ready to be a parent at 20 and thank the lord it never was a situation.

   Even just talking residence, ignoring inflation, my parents bought the house I grew up in (NYC Metro Area) for $185K in like 1991. Pretty sure the house is estimated on Zillow for like 600+ now. That was a legitimate house with property. I bought a condo in the city for $300K that’s 530 square feet. Times change. But it’s an investment.

   I make more money now than my parents have ever made in their lives (and they did just find. We’re middle to upper middle class). But when my family and I finally decide to move to the burbs, we’re looking at a close to $1M situation for something simple. That’s beyond inflation.

   So don’t compare. Do what’s right for you. I’m not even sure why your engagement means living with either of your parents.
