I think he should buy the gifts for his family and put both your names on it. You should buy something for the family to thank them for hosting you, such as a bottle of wine or gift certificate to a restaurant. But you shouldn’t have to splash out hundreds of dollars on gifts, especially if you’re in debt and struggling financially.

I make more than my boyfriend and we do 60/40 and plan to adjust as our incomes change. We currently rent and split rent, utilities, and household items this way. Groceries tend to not be split, since we cook for ourselves and when I go to the store, almost also the food is for me. We are planning on buying a house and I think we plan to split that 50/50 though. That’s what my boyfriend wants and we are shopping in a price range that is affordable for both of us if we had to pay the mortgage alone for whatever reason. While we aren’t married now, we do plan to get married. And we are clearly very committed to each other since we are planning on buying a house and getting married.
I make more but I insisted on splitting proportionally to income. I sorta had to push for it. It felt wrong for us to split 50/50 and me have more spending and saving money than him. We aren’t married, but we operate as a team. I don’t want to have more money at his expense. If you truly want to do 50/50, you need to live within HER budget, not yours. Because she’s the one who has less money to work with. So rentals, a house if you want to buy one, shared purchases, etc should be within her budget, not yours.
Splitting 50/50 is equal, but not always equitable. The way I see it, if you are living together and plan to get married, you’re already committed and should be acting as a team. By doing 60/40, rent is 25% of our respective incomes. I haven’t done the math for utilities and such, but I assume it’s the same way. It’s equitable.
Maybe he’s just a cynic based on his prior experiences. I mean he’s not wrong in that he is capable of cheating, he’s done it before. “I would never cheat on you, but I’m capable because I’ve done it before.”
