If you feel he has depression, a learning disability, ADHD or some other concern that would benefit from therapy or other form of help, there are lots of resources available.
If you feel he's truly just unmotivated and often takes the easy way out, ask yourself if you want to hitch your wagon to that horse regarding the long term prospects of your relationship and future. You don't want to end up 10 years down the road with someone who takes the easiest path at work and finds excuses to not help change the diapers or do chores around the house.
Since he's willfully cheating at his homework and putting in little effort to study, I think your looking at the latter.
Of course people change. Compare my worldvuew and values with me when I was 20, and you would see plenty of differences. People change and mature it's normal process.
Enviroment has tremendous effect as well. This why poverty and crime goes hand to hand for example. It does not mean poor people are evil, it's about environment they live snd have grown up in. Toxic family background can be just as damaging.

The “spontaneous” thing is a weird thought you have in your head. My wife had our son at 39. We had many conversations and planning years before it happened. It just isn’t spontaneous.
