Well this is a great example of having an intimate friendship. Friendships can definitely be pushed to certain limits including sleeping together and cuddling et cetera.
And it makes sense this can be exciting, and arousing, and makes you feel safe and loved and all those things.
But like you said. It isn't a relationship. he is not your boyfriend. He has made no such promises to be committed to make you happy. “I'll always keep you safe” are warm words, but even he doesn't know what will happen in the future. So that promise is more of a comfort rather than a truth per se.
It is up to you whether you want to continue this way of interaction with him or not. If he still has feelings for his school crush, that suggests that right now he is not capable to form a relationship with you; should you be interested to.

You and the wifey are the most stressful age. Everyone from 40-55 is super stressed facing similar issues as you. Kids leaving the house and hoping they don’t fuck uo their future the first chance they get, health starts failing, you both sort of enter menopause and the sex drives slows down.
Go to a counselor. It’s not because it’s in trouble, it’s because it needs maintenance.
