I appreciate you. I was in rehab for 6 months before I met him for my mental health. I made a lot of progress there, but I think when I got with him and stayed with him it was a form is self sabotage. I feel like it's knocked me back to the beginning but that's okay… I definitely need some deprogramming and I really appreciate that perspective. I will absolutely stick with therapy. I think it's the only thing I have to look forward to right now.
Therapy sounds like a great plan – it sounds like you're dealing with a lot and it can be really hard to decide which you you ultimately want to be, especially with a lot of loud voices from people you care about in the room. It takes a lot of personal confidence to gently tell people who mean well to shove their unsolicited opinions and advice where it really belongs. And it'd probably be the best way to handle the misplaced resentment you're feeling towards your partner. Resentment is a huge reason marriages end, and this only survives if you find a way past that.
Even outside of the relationship, as you plan your own life, remember that life's short and the world isn't what it was. Just because previous generations put on their suits and worked jobs they hated and that wore down their mental and physical health to bring home as much as possible so they could keep up with the Joneses and buy crap they didn't need or really want and stayed in loveless marriages and lived lives devoid of joy because it was “the adult thing” to do. Fuck that. You only get one go. And while you should do the important responsible things since you statistically have a few decades left (support yourselves, brush your teeth, do some healthy things sometimes, etc.), you're not obligated to do them in your dad's shirt if it doesn't fit you. You're not banished to purgatory for the sins of your ancestors and unreasonable self-imposed suffering isn't the noble path, it's the stupid one.
Best of luck! I hope you find a path that finds you mostly content with moments of real joy and just enough dissatisfaction so you have direction and an enjoyable path in life to pursue. With or without your Ms Frizzle-esque wife ?
It's okay to have preferences about your partner's appearance (I love that red shirt on you. You should wear it more often). It is NOT okay to treat your partner poorly when they don't present themselves exactly to your liking.
