The problem isnt you needing to communicate better, it’s him lacking communication skills or interest in communicating. And here’s the thing, deep communication isn’t just a preference, it’s called validation and emotional support and that’s NEEDED for trust, bonding and growth. And it’s easy for him to blow you off on this because you’re validating and taking an interest in him, so why does he need to bother to learn a new skill if he’s not the one who it affects? He comes off as rather selfish or at least oblivious if that’s his way to address the situation. So google the importance of validation and emotional support in relationships to help understand why it’s more important than he makes it out to be.
So what you want is not only understandable, but also is something needed to have a healthy, satisfying, and fulfilling relationship. With out it it’s harder to bond, partners are more likely to cheat, and mental health often suffers as well. You can bring this up to him, but it’s a hard skill to learn as an adult, and often therapy, and years of it is needed for it to improve. So unless this is how you want your romantic relationship with him to be, you may want to reconsider if this is really the right man for you.
