Just tell him to grow up and get over it because you are not putting up with his insecurities on such a ridiculous issue. If he doesn’t like it he can go. You would be amazed how not putting up with someone’s shit will correct their behavior. I speak from experience on both sides of it.
I think his logic could be reasonable (ie it’s about celebrating the girl getting into college and he’s afraid of taking the spotlight away from her by showing up with a girlfriend the mom’s friend group hasn’t met before) but he went about it in a very hurtful way.
I suggest sitting down with him and saying that while you respect his decision, the way he went about expressing it was hurtful to you and you’d like to understand what prompted this kind of response, as well as make a plan moving forward so that you two can communicate more effectively on future issues.
