I think you are missing something very important here, about 'why' he did this.
He was punishing you because he likes it when you are upset, it gives him control and power in the relationship and makes him feel like he has the upper hand.
Every time you cried about it, he gloated internally, about how he could still punish you, he could hurt you, and you had no idea it was him. He got an adrenalin boost from being so cruel to you.
You CANNOT stay in this relationship and be emotionally healthy. He will sabotage you at every turn.
