He's very blatantly putting those guys comfort over your safety. He'd rather protect them from having yucky feelings from being called out rather than protect you from physical assault. He might not have been able to prevent what happened, but by letting it slide he's making it clear that they can treat you and others like that around him.
He's values these assholes more than he values you. That's not a friend I would want to have.
Long term: I’m wondering if maybe your housing situation could be better. Maybe look into a duplex or a compound (depending on where you are and what’s affordable – “small compound” is totally realistic where I am but YMMV).
Moving is a pain, but your circumstances have changed dramatically, so it may be worth investigating and seeing what’s available (especially if you don’t have a deadline). That could buy you the privacy you need, while still having the twins in your care.
