I would definitely recommend talking to a therapist my dear. A few sessions. I honestly think your biggest problem is your own self esteem, it needs built up a little so that you can get away from feeling like you have to be nice to people who are not treating you properly.
Your ex's behaviour was due to him being a sub par person. What concerns me is that you allowed it to continue. Nice people tend to make excuses for others and I see that's what you've done here, for him, for too long – but definitely chat to a therapist, tell them all of this, they will help you untangle why you tolerated this twit, and they will help you identify the red flags etc, so that next time, you're better equipped.
