OP, if your partner is quite literally on his deathbed, stay, because in 10 years, do you want your last memory of someone you loved to be of abandoning them? You wouldn't be wrong to do so. But consider instead that in 10 years you could smile, say you put on a brave face, and know that you let someone die with grace, and NOT freshly dumped.
I'm just a bleeding heart for someone dying though. If he pulls through and starts to recover, that's when you get the fuck out IMO. Staying, for now, is the most compassionate thing you could do.

Step mom here of a teenager. I would absolutely bawl my eyes out (in a good way) over receiving a scrapbook of family time and memories! LOVE the idea! I think that paired with a really lovely handwritten letter on the first page of the book or the last page would be an amazing gift. I would keep something like that until the day I die!
