I think part of 'benefit of the doubt' here is less about the people in the story applying it to each other, and more about us redditors applying it to the situation.
People are not automatically great writers that give an exact and specific description of the situation that inherently include every relevant detail. Especially people who come for advice on how to communicate.

If we're betting, and we add the fact that in a comment elsewhere OP confirms the 'husband' and 'wife' are 'getting a divorce', I'd bet towards the eventual solution being the removal of the husband from the picture. The only one currently getting along with him seems to be the wife, and a vibe of 'on-last-leg' exasperation exists.
Again, don't think you're wrong about the husband, but I also don't think the situation is going to go there. The way it's forking now, none of the most plausible paths I see is going in that direction.

Sounds like he's not takin the relationship seriously if he's makin jokes about breakin up and not bein emotionally invested. It's tough when ya don't know where ya stand in a relationship, but it's important to communicate and see what's really goin on.
