If you expect an honest discussion you need to be honest yourself. Curiosity getting the better of you and wanting to remember what things were like at the beginning of your relationship may not justify looking into her private conversations, but owning that and apologising will pave the way for an open discussion.
In terms of her insecurity, it really depends on the place she was when you first started dating. It’s not necessarily a part of her personality. I remember when I was first dumped at 22 by the boyfriend I thought was the love of my life (I now cringe at the thought of him) I was crying to my best friend about how I’ll never be loved again. It was, of course, utter nonsense and my logical brain didn’t actually believe that.
Context is incredibly important in conversations and you don’t get that by looking at some old texts.
