It would probably be a good idea to learn how to debate without getting emotional; it's a great skill to have and there are plenty of logical things that back up being liberal. It's generally good to have logical reasons and come up with your own stances and limits so you know how far you'd go. If you debate with logic vs arguing from emotion, it is easier to separate the conversation from the relationship a bit because it's just a discussion backed in fact and logic.
