It’s good to have confidence, especially during interviews. Everyone should treat interviews as a mutually beneficial business exchange.
However, at 21, it is highly unlikely your boyfriend is the smartest candidate they’re interviewing. Considering as well that he’s in the tech field, he’s ego sounds overinflated.

I think you're rightfully upset. He told you he wouldn't be out late, and said multiple times he'd be back soon. It's common courtesy to at least send an update if plans change. I know if I didn't hear back from a partner when I was expecting them to be home I'd be really worried about their safety. Needing clear communication about plans isn't being controlling.
