This is a result of having low self-worth in general, which causes people like yourself to use your partners to prove that you are worthy of being loved. (In psychology, this is sometimes referred to as an “anxious attachment style.”) In the relationship, such people will demand that their partners behave a certain way for validation that they are worthy of love.
The problem with this strategy is that you feel good when your partner is “behaving,” and miserable when your partner does not do what you want. In other words, in such an interesting relationship, you happiness depends on the actions of your partner.
The solution is to find ways to improve your self-esteem (such as therapy). When you learn to love yourself, you will be comfortable in a relationship without the need to make demands of your partner. Additionally, you won't be co-dependent and afraid to leave a relationship that doesn't work for you.
There are times I do that. I don't always just give in and I'm hardly a doormat in general, but it's always an exhausting battle to get to anything like equivalent effort in the household department. Each time I do a cost benefit analysis in my head. Is this going to be a fight that takes more effort than just doing the thing? Your point is correct that they seem happy to exploit my time and effort and also seem entitled to because of some feeling that they generally work harder.

u/spinachmuffin please OP listen to the ex and your flatmate. before you know it he will be impossible to get rid of. he will live in your home and off your resources and use your resources to see other women. it can also grow volatile when he doesn’t get his way. just dangerous in the long run…men like this are unhinged. main reason why I kept it brutal and unfiltered in my first comment…I knew something would have to resonate or correlate with you and your situation.
