I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that your wife is feeling very overwhelmed.
I'm not a parent, but I know that raising kids is HARD. The mental load that comes with being the primary caregiver for 2 children is immense.
From what I can see, she is almost entirely responsible for the meal planning, grocery shopping & cooking. And she is doing it for a family of 4, two of those I am guessing are fussy eaters and will go from refusing to eat anything red one week, to only wanting chicken nuggets the next. That aspect alone can be hugely taxing.
From her perspective, when you come in & tell her that the house isn't clean enough & that she needs to do more, she probably feels like it's a personal attack against her. The way you are approaching this is probably making her feel like a failure, that she isn't good enough.
It's pretty clear how you feel, but not once have you mentioned how your wife feels, or what her actual perspective is, and I am guessing that is because you have never actually asked.
Sit down. Talk to her. Have an open conversation. Ask her how she is doing, and listen. Don't attack. Don't argue. Just listen.

Well it's a pretty funny story actually! He also accidentally let it slip out but I wasn't sure if I heard him correctly so I asked, “what?” and he said, “I really like you!” I didn't want to look like an idiot so I just rolled with it and took it as the truth. Skip to a bit later after a big milestone in our relationship, I just said “I love you” and he said it back. He confessed that he had actually said it earlier by accident and was afraid of looking stupid and making things awkward. I would have said it then, too. It's a good memory.
